Updates
Official node releases are published at https://www.talesmith.studio/updates/node/. Your node can check and install them from the UI without uploading zips by FTP.
Where to update
Sign in → Settings → Social — scroll to Software updates.
- Check for updates — compares your running version to the update channel.
- Install {version} — appears when a newer release is available.
The same area includes the optional Test channel switch (experimental builds). Leave it off unless you know you need the test mirror.
Stable vs test channel
| Channel | Source |
|---|---|
| Stable (default) | https://talesmith.studio/updates/node/versions.txt |
| Test | Experimental mirror under /updates/node/test/ |
Enabling the test channel warns you to back up first. See Backups.
What an update installs
The updater downloads the official zip for the next version on your channel. For a node, the package contains only:
node.php,node.js,talesmith.js,talesmith.css,hubs.txt
It does not overwrite data/. Posts, connections, and settings stay in place.
Requirements: Outbound HTTPS to talesmith.studio, ZipArchive, and writable install files. See Host requirements.
Patch vs major/minor
- Patch updates (e.g.
0.8.05→0.8.06) replace application files. - Minor/major updates may run migration steps before files are written.
If install fails partway, the updater tries not to leave a broken mix; use Backups if you need to roll back.
Integrity and versions
Each release is listed in versions.txt with a SHA-256 hash. The updater verifies node.php against that hash before and during install.
Your installed copy also stores applied versions in data/versions.txt. data/config.php can set strict_integrity so the node refuses to run if node.php was edited locally. Details: Versions.
After updating
Reload the page when prompted so the browser loads new node.js / talesmith.js. If something looks wrong, restore from Backups or re-upload a known-good release from the official site.
Hub updates
Self-hosted hub updates will use /updates/hub/ when hub downloads are offered. See Hub installation (coming soon).
